Perfectly Perfect

With devilish dolls, chained up teddy bears, and a high flying circus melody Elizabeth and the Catapult’s newly released video for “Perfectly Perfect” calls to mind the innocence of childhood days as well as the bits of bad we all hold within. The tempo belongs under the big top, and I can just picture acrobats doing soaring splits above my head, as clowns play pranks on one another, and dainty ballerinas balance on elephants’ backs. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while, and I love the speech-like quality of the vocals, bringing to mind Fionna Apple’s song “Extraordinary Machine”. The stop motion filming and the vintage Toy Story feel portrays something so magical, yet utterly haunting. It’s like that doll in the corner of your room: her porcelain skin so white and pure, her hair neatly curled, and her teacup by her side. She’s a wonderful companion, however when the lights go out her shadow seems to move and teeter– Making us wonder if perfect things can have perfectly imperfect plans.

Hightide Hotel

This week it’s going to be short and sweet. Check out this band if you’re a fan of By Surprise, Cap’n Jazz, Braid, Algernon Cadwallader and bands along that soundscape. They recently released a new album available for free download here. It’s titled “Nothing Was Missing, Except Me”, just released on Runner Up Records. That’s it, check it out. Here’s a couple selections of that album. Enjoy!

The Most Eclectic Online Music Chart

We Are Hunted is an online music chart that scours the net for the buzz on blogs about artists and music. Their top songs come from what people are saying on social networks like Facebook and MySpace, message boards and forums, Twitter and P2P networks. It’s a great way to discover new music and discuss it with fellow music lovers.

We Are Hunted features songs that cross all genres: indie, hip-hop, rap, international, rock, acoustic, and just about anything else you could think of. Take a listen to “Lemonade” by Braids (featured on the front page), with its almost seven minutes of echoing, layered vocals and catchy riffs. Or maybe you want to get your dance on to Phaeleh’s techno beats in the song “Afterglow.” A few of the songs featured make me feel like I’m falling down a hole in Alice in Wonderland, but hey, if you’re into that feeling… I’ve never heard of a majority of these songs or artists; We Are Hunted is definitely a eclectic breeding ground for uniqueness and innovation in a world saturated with less than terrific music these days.

Check out www.wearehunted.com, especially if you’re that person who just has to know the upcoming songs and musicians before everyone else.

The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die

So I had heard of this band before, but I never really listened to them. Recently I was at a basement show in Lowell, Ma at my friends apartment dubbed “The Ant Cellar”. The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die was playing along with Grown Ups and a few other bands. I walked down into the basement and The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die was playing their set. They were really good live, pretty tight, and something in my head clicked. I thought “wow this band is really really good”, so for the past week or two I’ve been spinning their ep titled “Formless” on repeat. I can’t get enough of this band, I’ve had friends say they remind them of early Modest Mouse. Either way click play and check it out.

Victim Kin Seek Suit – The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die

Gordon Paul – The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die

If you enjoyed the musical selection this week, check out their website. You can buy their music on their band camp, and their merch here.

Doctors and Architects

Listen to this brilliant cover of “Heart it Races” by Dr. Dog.  I love the tap your toes beat and the unique spin they’ve put on it. The original song is by the Australian indie-pop band Architecture in Helsinki. Dr. Dog (hailing from good ol’ Philadelphia) replaces the original techno tones with their indie-rock style.

Someone call a Dr., because my heart is racing!

I Heart Eliza Doolittle

Damn it’s catchy! The lovely British songstress Eliza Doolittle’s tunes are girlie, light, and incredibly fun. Her single “Skinny Genes” was a smash hit across the pond, and I absolutely adore the video for it. How fun does that party seem?! Doolittle’s smooth and delicate voice is enhanced by the sheer quirkiness and humor of the song (please try to count the sexual innuendos made in this video…tee-hee-hee). With her song “Rollerblades” currently featured as the iTunes free song of the week, something tells me that America is going to be hearing a lot more of her! While she hasn’t released a full album yet, her self-titled EP is available. It includes another gem of a song called “Pack Up.” This jazzy sensation fills my ears with melodic joy, and I can’t help but dancing along. Fans of Lenka and Yael Naim will be delighted!

It seems to me that Eliza Doolittle might just be a very “fair lady” indeed.

Snowing(The Band)

There are a few indie labels that hit home runs with almost every band they sign. One of those labels in my mind is Count Your Lucky Stars, their roster includes Castevet, Empire! Empire!, Football, ETC, Into It. Over It. and a bunch of more awesome artists.  Back to what I originally intended on posting about which is a band named Snowing. They’re based out of Pennsylvania which seems to be producing a ton of great bands lately whether it be pop punk or old school emo inspired bands.  If you like Cap’n Jazz, Algernon Cadwallader, Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate, or basically any Kinsella family project ever made then you will enjoy Snowing. Even the band I posted about last week Now Now enjoys Snowing. Just open your ears and check it out. They just released a new album which is available for free or however much you want to pay.

Here’s a few tracks off their new album titled  “i could do whatever i wanted if i wanted”

i think we’re in minsk – snowing

malk it – snowing

so i shotgunned a beer and went back to bed – snowing

If you enjoyed listening to Snowing you can download their new album for free on their website.

They have a blog, myspace, and facebook.

Also check out Square of Opposition Records, and Count Your Lucky Stars Records for other great bands and snowing merch.

Yozzup presents: Bach From The Dead

I hope you all enjoy this spectacular stop motion animation and kickin’ soundtrack. Ryan Gruzen of Yozzup! constructed frame after painstaking frame in his very own living room, (which seems quite nice, by the way). Enjoy the Bach, enjoy the stop motion, and make sure you let Yozzup! know how awesome this video is.

Cheers,

Whistle While You Work

RE-RE-REMIX. This must be what Cinderella parties to after midnight! Nick Berkte, aka Pogo, is responsible for putting a whole new spin on some Disney classics. His remixes of film scores/dialogue/sounds are incredible. After some YouTube success, Berkte was hired by the Walt Disney Company to mix and mash for a living (or at least until his contract expired!). The big shots at Pixar even contacted him to create a remix for the film Up,  entitled Upular.

Sounds like Mickey Mouse has met Deadmau5.
