All That Jazzcore?

First of all let me address the collective “what the hell” coming from quite a few of you. Jazzcore is definitely what one might call a fusion subgenre .Its like if you took grindcore  and combined it with John Coltrane and Miles Davis, throw in  a little bit of Math Rock of course and voila!! It is definitely my pleasure to present to you a band that was pretty prolific during their relatively short career, “The Number 12 Looks Like You”. Yeah the name is ridiculous but the music is greater than or equal to their name in terms of insanity. Take the best parts of Circle Takes the Square and The Dillinger Escape Plan and occasionally throw in some Antonio Francis Jobim. This is another case of case of gone to soon as they disbanded last year after the lead singer sighted depression and anxiety issues. They released four full lengths and three EPs.  The two best albums of the bunch are “Mongrel” and ” Worse Than Alone”.  “Mongrel” is more consistent whereas “Worse Than Alone” is a bit more experimental. Enjoy!

YUCK

Recently on one of the forums I browse, someone put up a video from a BBC Radio One session of this band called Yuck. If you enjoy the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, or any of those “shoegaze” bands, definitely check out this band Yuck. They hail from all over the world with members from New Jersey, the UK, and even Japan. Check it out, i’ve been spinning their song Get Away a ton this week. Also they just released an album titled “Yuck” so pick that up if you enjoy the tunes.

Get Away – Yuck

Georgia – Yuck

Rose Gives A Lilly – Yuck

Something You May Have Overlooked

Well I am done with Math for right now(why does that sound like something you would hear on Intervention) and I definitely have something a bit different. Now,everyone has heard of the Dear Hunter by now , and yes we all know they are good. They are amongst the few progressive rock bands that has managed to cross over into the “mainstream” without being named Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson or The Mars Volta. But what plenty of fans fail to appreciate is that there may have been an even better band that preceded the Dear Hunter. Blasphemy, I think not, perk your ears up for The Receiving End of Sirens were probably on track to becoming the next At the Drive In. Ironically, they shared a very similar fate as the aforementioned band that was also gone to soon. Shortly after “Between the Heart and the Synapse”was released Casey Crecenzo of The Dear Hunter fame was kicked out of the band for creative reasons(ego) and TREOS recorded “The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi”. While Mi Fa Mi was exceptional, it really did not feel like the same fast, furious, and passionate TREOS we all fell for. Shortly after the group disbanded falling amongst the legions of other amazing bands that could not quite get things to work.

Sleep City

One of my favorite current Rhode Island bands goes by the name Sleep City. They are a 6 piece post hardcore band, that has evolved over the years from a little pop punk band to what they are now. Recently signed to InVogue records, Sleep City released an EP yesterday titled “Still Breathing” which is available here, and on itunes. Check them out if you enjoy bands like Rosaline, Dance Gavin Dance, and Emarosa. Here are a few tracks off their new EP, They will be on tour this spring with Rosaline. Check their facebook for dates and other ways to stay connected with the band.

The Road to Awe (Xibalba) – Sleep City

The Five And A Half Minute Hallway – Sleep City

Post Meridiem – Sleep City

More Math-y Goodness

I had to read a book called flowers for Algernon in 6th or 7th grade it was surprisingly an intriguing and deep premise, and at the time I could not even appreciate it. This has nothing to do with Algernon Cadwallader , in fact their name roughly translates into Welsh kings with mustaches.  These native Pennsylvanians(why the hell does it seem like a million amazing bands come from this state) make some really good music check them out!!!

P.S I have been on a bit of a Math binge lately the next band will be different…

Pianos Become the Teeth

I guess its sort of like people break dancing to classical music, maybe that’s a stretch. But you have to admit combining post rock/ambient music with “screamo” is an interesting dynamic. Although not wholly unusual(*see Envy,City of Caterpillar and Pg99) Pianos Become the Teeth focus there energy on creating elegant post rock landscapes; while at the same time ardently destroying your eardrums. Thus reminding you this is not just for driving down the highway on a pretty day, this music is full of passion. If you like this check out La Dispute too.

American Football

A lot of people have heard of American Football, and if you haven’t now is your chance. This is going to be almost a throw back to the band. I’ve been listening to their album a bunch lately, and they are just so good it’s tough not to share. They formed back in 97′ a few years after Cap’n Jazz went their separate ways. American Football only released 1 full length and an EP, so their catalog is very digestible. Some of the bands if not all of the bands I have featured so far were influenced by American Football or some off shoot band from the members of it. They are a great almost ambient band, good for long rides and just chilling out. Check out a few tracks off their 1999 self-titled full length.

Honestly – American Football

I’ll See You When We’re Both Not So Emotional – American Football

Never Meant – American Football

This Will Be Our Year

There is nothing that tickles me more than this song from the 1960s British pop band The Zombies. I love love love it! In honor of Chinese New Year and 2011 still being a newborn, I thought I’d share a ditty that speaks of new beginnings and opportunity.

So, turn up your speakers and turn a new leaf.
